From birth Sofie slept in our room in a cradle. However, there were problems quickly and we bought her a crib in a marketplace which we transformed into a co-sleeper. Serenity! We didn’t need to move at night and she was back besides us. After 6/7 months, she didn’t need any night feedings and according to our surroundings it was time to let her sleep in her own room. That worked for a month. Then the nights became dramatic. I had read that it could get worse, but we were desperate. She woke up screaming and wanted out!!! We then tried everything from lights to sleeptraining. Letting her cry was not an option for us. A baby doesn’t cry for nothing; even though it was about attention, love and security. That is one of the nicest things about parenting. That’s why we gave our daughter what she needed, even in the middle of the night.
Still, we were always looking for a solution. We reset the co-sleeper and we started sleeping again. We found that our own turmoil and distrust at night also had an effect on Sofie, of course. We found more rest and more sleep, but noted that it only took a little distress (having the flu, teething or a growth spurt) for us all to be up all night again. Sometimes, she was still awake at 3 am, sucking on her thumb and trying to find her way back to sleep. We also noticed that she was very sensitive to my energy; when I was awake, you could be certain that she would also wake up in about 5 to 10 minutes. That didn’t feel good. A child should sleep through the night, certainly a little girl who has so much to endure with all her new experiences.
I had told Tom before of our problems with Sofie and informed him about our situation. The main problem for us was that Sofie was awake for hours. Sleeping by herself (in her own bed) was not that important for us. Tom advised us to use mix 90, and when it arrived we started using it immediately at home. After 5 days I was uncertain; there was still nothing changed and, moreover, things seemed only to be getting worse. Tom advised us that it could take days, even weeks, until there would be any results… So we had to be patient. After a week and a half we noticed a difference. She had more rest and trusted herself. She was able to fall asleep by herself and we did not have to stay with her until she fell asleep. After 10 days we had a good night sleep for the first time in a while. The three of us slept like logs.
We have now slept for four nights in a row. Sometimes Sofie just wakes up briefly, then crawls against me and falls asleep again. Here's to the next four good nights although surely there will be another bad night in there, she's only human and we all get a bad night's sleep from time to time. For now, we three are sleeping wonderfully. Who knows, maybe we’ll let her sleep in her own bed for a whole night. For now we are just enjoying waking up with all three of us and also Sofie’s sweet words in the morning.Disclaimer: results may vary from person to person and are not based on scientific results.
