Internal stress

What is internal stress?

Internal stress symptoms vary according to the individual but you may find that if you are feeling irritable or nervous, or if you are struggling to sleep or are having anxiety attacks, these are indications that you are suffering with internal stress.

Internal stress can be quite overwhelming, but it is important to remember that many people suffer with stress and anxiety and they work through it. You can do so too. What may have happened is that things have built up and are piling up on top of you. If you are feeling out of control, then your body reacts to those feelings. It senses danger. Humans have evolved to react in very specific ways in the event of danger – we either stand and fight, or we run away quickly. In the twenty-first century, neither of those responses are particularly useful, but even so, that’s what our bodies think we should be doing.

Is internal stress useful?

A little stress can be useful as it helps us work quickly and solve problems, however if your internal stress is affecting you physically or emotionally then it is not helpful. If you are suffering with physical symptoms such as headache, upset tummy, back pain or you are having trouble sleeping then it is possible your stress is out of control and you need to address it. Similarly, if you are feeling moody, tense or depressed, it is time to take action.

Taking action against internal stress

Taking some time for you is one of the best things you can do when you want to relieve internal stress. Take twenty minutes to sit down quietly with your favourite beverage and really consider what it is that is causing you stress. Name the feelings you have. ‘I feel overwhelmed’, or ‘I feel sad’, or ‘I feel like my boss is getting at me’. Try and identify all the ways that life is too much for you at the moment and is causing you too much internal stress. Write those things down. Then look at your list and consider what advice you would give a friend or a neighbour if they were having similar issues.

Taking action against the causes of your internal stress can really help relieve internal stress symptoms.

Phase two of your recovery is to start putting yourself at the heart of everything you do. You are vitally important. Your universe should turn around you, rather than you revolve around other people. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, and then make sure you’re eating well, exercising, and spending quality time doing the things you enjoy with people you love. At the end of the day, that’s what life is about.
